On Sunday, Joel and I teamed up to photograph Sarah and Brian’s wedding at West Point and Patriot Hills Golf Club. I absolutely fell in love with this couple’s love story. They’re technically already married. Brian, an Army officer and West Point graduate, has spent the past year or so serving in Iraq while Sarah finished her degree and lived on base in Hawaii. Sarah did an amazing job planning the wedding from 4,800 miles away with help from her equally amazing mom.
Sarah and I have been doing most of the collaborating and photo planning through Facebook, so I’ve been following her countdown to Brian’s return as well. I can’t begin to tell you how happy I was when she posted the photos from his Homecoming. Somewhere along the way, I started rooting for this couple with all my heart, and I’m so glad they got to celebrate with their relieved and joyful friends and family.
This military family has sacrificed so much- holidays, birthdays, ordinary days- when they just couldn’t spend time together. Hundreds of people flew in from all over the country, especially the groom’s family, and I’m so glad I could photograph this day for them. I’m so glad, for just one day, almost everyone they love could be together all in one place. We worked hard to show that in the pictures, to make sure everyone was included.
Of course, I said ALMOST everyone could be there. Friends of the groom are still serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. It’s my greatest hope that the photos not only reflect the elegance and the beauty of the day, which were evident in abundance, but what it felt like to be there, too. The laughter, the silliness and the comradery were wonderful to witness, and we both wish the bride and groom all the best!
There are only supposed to be 20 photos in the sneak peek, but I got carried away and uploaded 57. Wherever you are, however far away, we hope you enjoy seeing them!
